I live in the city and only recently we moved into a house instead of an apartment and we now have lots of outdoor space. I am wondering if nature studies can be done in your own backyard often or if you need to take them to new places all the time to them.
Also, my 8 yr old is very interested in gardening but I’ve never done it, I know nothing about it or plants really.
Where do I begin and can you garden anywhere or do you need to have a certain type of land to do it on?
We have soil in our backyard that is largely a mixture of clay and sand so we do raised bed gardening. We knew nothing before starting and have just learned by making mistakes. There are TONS of books on gardening that have helped us. It is a lot of fuan and something that we are learning together as a family.
We also do nature study in our own back yard almost every day. Putting up different types of birds feeders will soon attract different kinds of birds. We do go to other places occassionally but it is mostly done in our own back yard. I have to say, however, that there is a small field behind our house so we are sort of “in the country.”
You could research what types of plants/flowers attract butterflies and moths as well. Just some thoughts – HTH!
Now is the perfect time to look for the “firsts” of the seasons and journal about them. The first tulip/daffodils/crocus that appears, first buds on different trees, first type of certain bird back to the area – here we look for northern flickers, red winged black birds, cedar wax wings and American goldfinch just to name a few.
I am trying a straw garden for the first time….doesn’t take up too much room and isn’t permanent unless I decide to keep it up. LOL Kids are enjoying the prep anyway and I hope I can grow something….straw garden is supposed to be idiot proof. We will see…I seem to be able to kill everything even aloe vera plants!
