I am prepared to use SCM Middle Ages guide for history. However, after reading something on MFW website, I’m not sure how to proceed. On their website, they said it is good to do a study on world cultures before doing world history. We’ve already done Egypt to Rome, with very little cultural study. I guess the SCM Visits to……. books are to cover cultures. I am not using that with Middle Ages. I know we could incorporate some cultural study into the history, but when I look at MFW Exploring Countries and Cultures, I think about doing World Cultures as a separate course. I’m just not sure if I should do that first or later.
Why I am contemplating this is because my daughter is working at remedial level, so she most likely will not do what is considered high school level work in high school. She will be in 8th grade this fall, so credits will begin in another year. There is a diploma program I can use to get her a general education diploma, getting credits through remedial work. I am trying to decide how I want her to get social studies/history credits during her high school years. Credits have to be in different branches of study each year. If I wait to do the MFW cultures when she is considered high school, she could get credit for it. I guess what I am asking is whether culture is that important before doing world history. We could read some cultural books during Middle Ages, but is waiting to do an actual world culture study until later a good thing? In my daughter’s case, if a cultural study is going to require a good deal of map work, later would be better for her, but, at the same time, I can see why it is good to have some of that before the history of the world. I’m making it hard to decide because I thought about using a book from the MFW package, but if I want to make it an actual course, I would want to keep the book for then. I’m talking through this and pretty much answering my own questions. So, basically, it is, do we do the world cultures course first, or do I save it for high school when my daughter can get credit for it?
