Hi, Doug: (or Jordan or whoever knows these things!)
When I try to load the SCM homepage from my IE7 browser, it loads verrrrryyyy slooooowly, and I keep getting a script error message (the one telling me it’s causing things to run slowly–oh, really? hadn’t noticed–and might make windows unresponsive). Repeatedly clicking ‘yes’ to stop running the script (the box appears several times) usually gets it to load eventually; clicking ‘no’ just seems to freeze everything, although sometimes I can bail out and go back to my own homepage. I disabled script debugging last night and rebooted, but it’s still occurring.
I wondered if you knew anything further I could do about this. I don’t really want to switch browsers since I’m one of those people who curls up in the fetal position and whimpers for 3 weeks whenever I experience “change” and my kids need me to be alert enough to finish school by Memorial Day….
I do have a workaround in that I bookmarked the SCM discussion forum page, and it loads just fine. Then I can access other parts of the site from there. (Aha! Take that, you cruel script….)
I’m sorry the site isn’t loading well for you. IE7 is the slowest of any browser we’ve tested, but it should still work for our home page. I’d be happy to help figure out what is going on and fix it if we can.
What kind of Internet connection do you have (cable, DSL, satellite, dial-up, etc.)? Does the message give any more details about the name of the script that’s running slowly or other information that might help us track down the problem?
Also, please visit http://bit.ly/l7CJfq and it will collect some information about your computer and send it to me. Just fill in your e-mail address and click the “Send Details” button.
Thanks for offering to help. I should have PM’d instead, but it somehow did not occur to me until after I posted here.
I am running on a DSL connection, and the error message didn’t say anything more specific than “….is running a script….” so I don’t know anything further about it. It only happens on the SCM homepage. However, I did receive a “run-time error” message on a different site this morning as well. I will click on the link in your post and send the details.
I am using Google Chrome today, and…..*sigh*….it feels okay. I placed my three most visited sites on their bookmark bar, brought over my comfy-cozy homepage that I use with IE7, and I may even grow fond of Google Chrome…..it’s speedy!
I was able to reproduce the problem here and fix it. So you can probably go back to IE 7 if you really want to.
That said, the problem was caused by an update to some software that is used on lots of websites so I wouldn’t be surprised if you start seeing this problem on other sites too. You’ve already seen how Chrome is so much faster. It’s also much more secure because it keeps itself updated automatically. Many newer websites will also look nicer in Chrome because it supports the current web standards that are being used for modern site design, which IE doesn’t.
Well, I have given Google Chrome more time now, and I think I will adapt to it just fine. I put my most-used sites on the bookmark bar (3 libraries, homeschool organizer, and SCM….surprising choices, eh?) and my yahoo groups, so I’m a happy camper now. I believe that the first time I tried it, it felt really awkward because I didn’t have any time to customize it.
Thanks for fixing the problem, though. If I ever think of a reason to use IE7 again, it will come in handy.
Sue, how is Google Chrome working for you – do you like it? I just found this thread and had asked about it in another – so as you are using it I thought I would ask you. Linda
Well, a couple of months ago I tried it and found myself so rattled by not having all of my internet creature comforts in their familiar “point and click” spots. I just had no time that first day to set up my familiar little homepage, and I was lost without my Yahoo toolbar! (Apparently, you cannot install the Yahoo toolbar on Google Chrome.)
However, I decided (out of desperation because IE7 was giving me so many problems) to just use it for awhile. It really didn’t take much time to bring in my good ol’ homepage, and then I spent a few minutes considering, which sites do I really, really want to be able to just “click and I’m there” the most? I discovered that it was very easy to place my homeschool scheduling site, SCM, my 3 favorite libraries, and the link to my Yahoo groups on Google Chrome’s bookmark bar. It also automatically placed a link to my Favorites tab from IE7 at the other end of the bookmark bar, so I’m really a happy camper.
It is faster than IE7, and I love the way the things move when you jump from page to page. I don’t think I can adequately explain it; it just looks cool. There are a few other nice things about the way it offers to remember certain logins or auto-suggests searches in similar fields. (For example, 2 of my local libraries have the same page to search for materials, so when I have both of them open in separate tabs, I can search very quickly to see if either has a certain book because it will make an auto-suggestion as I start to type on the second library’s page.)
It also has a sense of humor. Today, I was having some issues that made my computer run very slowly for awhile. When I tried to load something using Google Chrome, it was taking too long, it gave me an option to kill the page and try to reload, then eventually, it gave me a big frowny face that said, “Oh, snap!” and something to the effect that it was unresponsive and needed to be reloaded later…..I just kept laughing at the “oh, snap!” comment.
All in all, I’m finding more to like about it the longer I use it and not as much to dislike as I thought I would. Plus, all of the websites I visit really look nicer. I guess Internet Explorer was getting to be too bland.
Thanks, I am using IE9 – I upgraded because I keep hoping it will be improved ha! It i slow, crashes constantly and is totally annoying – so I guess I will give Chrome a go and be patient setting it up – I can always go back if I don’t like it – but you have made me think it is worth a look. Thaks for that – Linda
