Our family just finished reading aloud Heidi by Johanna Spyri. This book quickly became my six year old daughter’s favorite. I was wondering if Johanna Spyri’s other books so beautifully develop the characters and interweave the spiritual lessons. Is there a book of hers that you would suggest we read next? I am unfamiliar with any of her other writing. Thank you so much!

I have this one called A Little Swiss Boy:

i haven’t actually read it yet, but it was published in 1926. I got it b/c we loved Heidi so much. I think that it will be good.

Just so you know, Heidi Grows Up and Heidi’s Children were not written by Johanna Spyri. They were written by her translator, Charles (um, can’t remember his last name.)  They are pretty good, and I loved them as a child, but they don’t have the quality Spyri’s own books had.

Funny, I was just wondering the same thing. I have one that I got at a thrift store for a dime called “Cornelli” but haven’t had time to read it (helpful, huh? 😉 ). The intro at the front, though, contends that this story deserves to have the same recognition, at least, as “Heidi,” “for in it we find a deeper treatment of character, combined with equal spirit and humor of a different kind.”
