I see that Aesop’s Fables is listed as one of the books for Grades 1-3 in Module 2.  Can someone who has the handbook for this tell me when and how much of it is used during module 2?  (The sample doesn’t go that far.)  I ask because we plan to start using the SCM history modules next year when dd starts first grade (we are doing K this year), so we wouldn’t hit module 2 for 2 more years yet.  However, I’ve also seen Aesop’s fables mentioned other places as an excellent place to start for a child who is just starting to do narration.  I was just able to buy a secondhand copy of Milo Winter’s Aesop for Children and was thinking to start using that later this year  (when we get closer to hitting her 6th birthday) to start practicing the art of narration.  BUT if reading it this year is going to spoil a large portion of Module 2, then I don’t want to do that. Or is it really going to matter if we read through them this year, and then again when we do Module 2?

Any thoughts or comments?  If it would be better to save Aesop to use with module 2, can someone suggest something else similar to use for beginning narration?

    Thanks,

    Jen

The selections in the Treadwell Reading-Literature Primer is excellent material and it’s free at Baldwin. Also, the selections from the Elson Primer. Both were used here and the literature is outstanding. First Steps is good, too; but not excellent literature, just easy and the children enjoy the continuing adventures of the innocent characters.

We just got to the Aesop portion of Mod 2 and are enjoying it.  You will not ruin it at all.  I am not sure what collection we have, but we are not even reading half of our collection for the assigned reading.  They are so short I think they would be great to start practicing narration.  With the time you have between now and then, the specific stories will probably not stick with your daughter but she will probably have fond memories of the general idea of the stories if you do read the same ones.  Our collection doesn’t have all of the exact ones called for in Mod 2 so I just fit in a different one very easily.  If you feel reading the same one over would be boring or overkill, you can always just use a different story.  As far as I can see they do not coordinate with the ancient Greece reading, it is more a sampling.  I could be wrong and if they do coordinate I appologize but I think one beauty of SCM is the ability to adapt lessons to your family.  All that is to say, reading them now will not ruin them for Mod 2!

Thanks, lgeurink, that’s exactly what I wanted to know!  I kind of suspected that perhaps it was just a sampling used in Module 2…and yes I think you’re right that even if we read them now and then again in 2 years, she probably wouldn’t remember enough of the specific details to be bored with them if we repeated them.  I do love the flexibility of the SCM modules too – that’s part of what really drew me to them – just don’t want to have to tweak things TOO much! =)

Thanks and many blessings to all of you this Christmas!!
