Has anyone used Queen’s Lang Lessons for high school? There are several levels and the samples look good. Seems like there are also writing lessons included. Looks like a “nicer” way to get grammar/writing done.

I am just wondering if they cover what a “typical” high school course would cover such as R&S or analytical grammar, etc.

    Thx!

I’m not sure I can answer your question about comparing what it covers to other materials, but I will say my DD loves the Queen’s HS book #1 we’re using this year. She started out with AG and got to week 5. I honestly didn’t see the point of all the diagramming and decided it wasn’t what I was looking for my children to do so we scrapped it. I personally like the gentleness of Queens and all the aspects of language it covers. I think you can see samples on Queen’s site – each year covers a different aspect (ie year 1 covers story writing, year 2 covers essays, year 3 writing a research paper).

Oh thx! I was actually going to start AG next yr for 6th grade and start the 3 yr cycle. But now I will stick with Queens and see how it goes.

My daughter (9th grade) and my oldest son (7th grade) were both using AG together. She was getting it, but he was struggling a bit the more we moved on. I finally decided that for our family, knowing how to diagram a sentence wasn’t important. I think knowing how to write well and having good grammar skills is much more important than the knowledge of diagramming. I have no idea how to diagram and was learning along with them. They didn’t teach diagramming in any classes in high school or college that I took. I realize that some will say, “if you know how to diagram you’ll be able to write well and have good speech”, but I didn’t think the agony was worth it and am very happy with the switch (and so are the kids!). Just what works for our family and each family is differnet. I honestly felt so free once we ditched it.

We’ve used QLL for 3 years now for high school.  This is what I will continue to use with them.  In jr. high I use Our Mother Tongue which is a very gentle approach to grammar, does go through diagramming in a very low stress way, and helped my girls understand why words are used in various ways, etc.  We really liked that this program actually told you what the latin meaning was of the words (verb, noun, etc.) which really helped to remember where they go, why they are important, etc.  Queen’s does a good job of going over the writing, in my opinion.  Other items are covered as well, and yes, I would say it does cover what you need for high school.

So great to hear others say this. It is hard to get reviews on Queen’s things.
