My 6yo son is a reluctant writer – that is putting it nicely, I think.  He does not willingly write, or draw, or color, or even paint – nothing that involves holding a pencil-type instrument LOL.  I have been told that this is not so unusual for little boys, so …?

My question is – is the copywork in Queen’s Lang. Lessons enough, or should we be doing something else as well?  We are doing L.L. for Little Ones 3, and there is not copywork daily, but at least once a week, maybe every third or fourth day.

He was in pub school last year for k, and no more willing to write then, but was pressed into it and did eventually become more willing, even to the point of writing and drawing pictures at home a bit. (He also started out that year an undetermined left-handed or right handed writer – the teacher and I both thought he would settle on the left, but on his own he settled into right handedness – I don’t know if this has any relevance.)  He has “regressed” away from that advance in writing output now.  I am wondering if we are truly losing ground, or if there is a natural progression that will result in his writing with ease without being forced – I hesitate to push too hard because I don’t want it to turn into a disciplinary issue.

My daughter is a natural writer and always has been – I can barely keep paper in the house to keep up with her.  I am not sure that I have good perspective on little boy’s writing skills because I have grown used to her output.

What are your thoughts?  Is Lang. Lessons enough?

For that age, I believe it is enough copy work.  If you want you could also get her printing practice with picture study which after they have gone through their letters they do short  2 or 3 word phrases.

On the days that CM LA has no copy work you could have him copy on small small sentence(phrase) from the bible.

But really they do not need much and you want more to encourage narration at this point to fall in love with learning and slowly bring in more copy work.  It really is a lot of work for their hands.

Personally I would just do the LA and then the practice in printing with pictures.

I am also using Language Lessons for Little Ones Vol 3 with my 6 year old son. In addition to that, I usually ask him for one sentence a week of copywork. I do pick short sentences but, if it still seems too much for him, I’ll let him just write 3 words a day until it’s completed. I would guess that he’s only writing about 3 days a week, not every day. I also don’t mind if we skip the copywork sometimes.

Not sure I’m “doing it right” but that’s what we do (or at least attempt to do!)
