Has anyone purchased any of the Queen history stories? Are there any pictures inside? Are they nicely done? Are the stories good for read alouds? I am looking for something with stories in it I can read aloud for my boys, esp. my 5 yr old.
We’re doing a very fun and relaxed K year of my own CM design:) (poetry, art, read alouds all over the place in different areas, math games and stories, hymn, classical music in car and looking at great art, signing time, writing practice in salt, etc, music and movement)
but I am running out of books and things to keep going with it. We are also reading the Little House books at breakfast.(and exhausting picture and chapter book lists from everywhere and getting them at the library. they love stories, I just can’t keep up with great ones:) alternating a story with an active thing and my 5yr old keeps asking for more to do, well he’ll just have to wait till 1st grade! now go play outside! anyway.
I am esp. looking at American History for Little Folks or American History Story Book.
Also from Queen I am considering Hearth Stories for more quality heart warming inspiring stories – anyone read this?
And am thinking if I have extra to invest in Vision Forums Building on the Rock series for family devotion time (are the themes in these too mature to read aloud to young ones?)
Ok. Thanks for any and all feedback before I plunk down my money somewhere.
I used to have these books. How easily scared is your 5 year old? I personally wouldn’t choose these stories for a 5 year old. There is a lot of killing, Indian raids and kidnapping that would scare most little kids to death. There aren’t much in the way of pictures either.
Maybe someone else has another opinon better than mine.
I can’t tell you about the Queen stories; I think they’re for older children but check on the site for age recommendations or email Sandi, she’ll tell you, esp. about the “Little Folks…” one.
However, the Building on the Rock series is for older children; ages 7/8 and up. There are other Bible devotions for younger children. Check with Grace and Truth books; they have many quality choices.http://www.graceandtruthbooks.com/category/for-your-little-ones
Also, the illustrated Lamplighter books for your 5 yr. old. You could maybe start reading “Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans”, though 6 is the normal starting point target age, but if he’s ready go ahead. The William Bennett illustrated by Michael Hague books are good for this age as are “Aesops Fables for Children” illustrated by MIlo Winter, books by Robert McCloskey, etc…
Thank you for the feedback! Sometimes it is so hard to tell about things like that without being able to see inside. I did find an online version of the Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans, and so about once a week we read one of those. Back to plumbing the depths of recommended book lists/catalogs lists and checking at the library then. Good to know they’re for older kids. Thanks again.
Heather, on the site it says the history books, for the exception of the Tudor one, are good read-alouds for all ages. I would really email Sandi and ask her; don’t need to miss out on good books!
