We will be using Module 2 this year with our 8yo and our 4 yo listening in.  I’d like to use the Story Bible and the Bible; how have you used them in the past for your scheduled Bible readings? Obviously, the Story Bible will be a lot more practical for reading several chapters at a time and keeping with short lessons, rather than from the Bible for this age group, but I guess I’m just worried about missing something pertinent by not hearing “from the Horse’s mouth”, so to speak.  Thoughts?

Thanks, Ladies (and Gents, I’m sure)

Well, I have used it for the reason you stated above but what I have found to be even more useful, IMHO, is “childproofing” some of the content of many old testament bible stories. I try not to do this for as many OT stories as possible, but there are many things in the old testament that one or all of my kids are not ready to hear in it’s entirety. I do not change the stories at all, I do not believe that would be right, but I do NOT give all the “details”, shall we say. The story bible is very good for this purpose. Instead of leaving out parts, or changing the story, most of the time it simply tells the parts on a level more appropriate for a child’s understanding.

Does this make sense? I hope it helped.

Miranda, that does help, thank you.  I’ve been thinking more about it, and I think what I’ll do is read ahead a day in my Bible, and as we’re reading the Children’s Story Bible, if I think something else needs to be mentioned, I’ll mention it, and perhapse read that portion to them from my Bible.  It’ll help me stick with my own study too!

Thanks for helping me think through itSmile

In Kindergarten & “Preschool”, we read the Egermeier Story Bible.  Last year, for Kindergarten & 1st grade, I read the Old Testament stories from the Vos Story Bible.  This year, I plan to read the New Testament stories from the Vos Story Bible for 1st & 2nd grade.  After this, we plan to use our regular Bible all the way on up.  I feel both the Egermeier and Vos were an excellent introduction to the Bible, with neither being too “watered down”, and yet understandable for early elementary.  Both children love the stories and remember the stories from these Bibles.  We feel it builds a good base at their level of comprehension for further study and understanding of scripture as they mature.  Also, the Vos Story Bible has fit nicely with the SCM History Modules.  Blessings, Melissa
