OK, you know those pull down maps they have in school classrooms? I want one! Very badly…. LOL But I don’t know what they’re called, and I don’t know where I’d get one. Any ideas? I would love to have one that holds multiple maps so I can save lots and lots of space….

They are called roller maps or sometimes you can buy a spring roller mechanism for a map. Kinda pricey though.

I just bought one on eBay for $99 that was brand new and had 9 maps and retails for $650. I was thrilled! Hubby hung it last week. Here’s the one I snagged – Rand McNally Map.

Here’s a thought…
Buy a window roller shade and attach a map of your choice to it. I am thinking of doing this for my kitchen window by placing it behind my curtains and rolling it down when I need it. It will be out of the way and out of sight when not in use. Since we do most school in my kitchen, I have to think creatively about decor because I don’t want it to look like a complete school room. 🙂

That’s a good idea, too. But I want multiple maps on one roller. Any ideas how I could do that? I’d love to make my own so I can custom tailor it to our needs (and maybe even interchange them as we need other things? )

I suppose it would be hard to put several maps on one small window shade. My window is very big, so the roller shade I use will be quite large and will probably hold the few maps I use.
If I think of something I will let you know. Maybe others here could help too. 🙂

One more idea, but I think it would depend on where you can hang it. Punch holes at the top of all your maps, and place them in two large rings that can be slid onto a strong spring tension rod. You could then just flip over to each map that you need as well as add or take away easily as needed.
Of course this is not as fancy as those sleek roller maps, but it might be more budget friendly 🙂

The only problem with that last idea, simple home, is that then it wouldn’t roll up out of my way. It would just be sitting there hanging in mid-air 24/7. Unless I am misunderstanding you? It does sound like a great, cheap solution, though. I will have to think about it some.
I have scoured the internet looking for something pre-made that I like, and nothing compares to the one missceegee got! Grrrr… 🙂 I have also scoured the internet looking for directions for making my own roll-down map. To no avail. 8-/ Am I really the only one who has thought of this idea??? LOL
Please give me more ideas!!!

Yes, I did think about it not getting completely out of your way. But the benefit would be to have all your maps in one contained place.
The rings I am talking about are the office kind, that easily open and close. You could take the rings off and leave the rod up behind the curtain or blinds until you need the maps again. That way at least it is not noticeable. But then again, you still have to find the storage drawer for the ringed maps if you do it that way. 🙂 I usually place all my large maps behind my school cabinet, out of sight and protected in an extra large, jumbo ziploc bag. You can’t see it unless you’re looking for them. 🙂

Then there’s always Home School Decor. We are devotees of this decorating style. We have skipped painting the walls. Instead we just install nearly-floor-to-ceiling-wall-to-wall bookcases. We don’t have to worry about the expense of painting or papering even the halls–that is where we tack up our maps. We don’t bother with curtains because we are only going to want to move them out of the way during science experiments anyway. We never worry about scratched table tops–we can’t see them for the art and science projects in various stages of completion. The basement walls don’t need to be painted, either, since that’s where we keep wall-to-wall critter tanks for all the pets and temporary residents. We eat in the kitchen, since the dining room is packed to the gills with bookcases, pianos, organs and computer terminals. Decorating dilemmas solved! My only worry is what to do for an excuse when the children all leave.

Bookworm, I have tried to get over my no-school-decor mindset. I have come a long way because my school cabinet is in the kitchen now. It actually looks cute with all my labeled baskets inside. 🙂 just don’t ask me to bring my son’s turtles inside. 🙂 oh, and when your kids leave, you can use the excuse of Grandma Camp activities!

lol Doug! I’m trying to get my kids to take shorter showers, not longer ones!!!
