I don’t recall a specifically CM approach to public speaking, unless it would come under recitation, or maybe a formal narration in front of others?
We’ve done a variety of things. Our eldest took a speech and debate class when a homeschool dad offered one. He was about 13 years old at the time.
We were part of CC a couple of years ago. The children had weekly presentations. Some were self chosen (or, parent assigned.) Later in the year, the topics were related to the weekly memory work to extend learning. The children on our campus ranged from 5-12. The older ones were encouraged to bring note cards if necessary. The younger ones began with things like “This is my favorite bear,” and why.
Now, our local homeschool group holds public speaking on the last Friday of each month in conjunction with park day. We had a nice turn out for the first event held in September. Children ages 3, or 4 through high school each had a turn standing in front of the large group to get practice in public speaking. Some of the younger children’s presentations included Bible verses, quotes, “Jesus Loves Me” sung in French, and poetry recitation. The older children gave presentations related to topics they are studying through our co-op. One was a presentation on the Karankawa Indians, another read her Writer’s Block assignment on the retelling of the Legend of the Bluebonnet. They all had fun and, after seeing what everyone else did, the wheels are spinning for this month’s presentations.
