DS is 6 and an avid reader. A few months back we finally dropped his naptime and switched to quiet time, though he had only been napping once a week or so before that for a bit. Now he LOVES quiet time when he gets a big stack of books and plows his way through them. I love that he loves reading, but I feel like he reads so quickly, and uses every spare minute he finds to read more, that he never gets a chance to ruminate on what he’s read, or how his day has gone, or reflect on things. I know this is a bit of an abstract concept but he is a smart kid. When he had “naptime” but usually didn’t nap, often when I went in to get him up he’d be in the middle of some elaborate “thought” and not want to stop thinking it yet. He really enjoyed it. Now that I have allowed him books, he doesn’t do that anymore. It is also affecting his ability to narrate our read alouds, I believe. Yesterday we read some from our Ben Franklin biography, then he went to quiet time and read a WHOLE Landmark biography on Ethan Allen. He was able to tell me some parts from the Ethan Allen book today, but was unable to recall a thing that we read about Ben Franklin immediately prior.
I am thinking about requiring him to spend the first time of his quiet time just resting and being quiet and NOT reading, to try to get him back to reflecting on the reading and just spending time alone. I am not sure if this will help. Any thoughts?
