I am planning to use the SCM Modern History Module 6 in the coming year, and I am a little confused about the projects mentioned at the end of each term. I understand about exams and plan to do them very informally by just chatting with my children about what we have learned throughout the term. But at what ages do you expect a child to do a project, and what would a project entail?

I’m envisioning a report with a board, etc, but that seems to me to be kind of like busy-work, and not something CM would have recommended. So please enlighten me. I would love to see examples of projects your family has completed.

We do the projects as a family.  If you go to the “links and tips” page for each history guide, there are ideas for projects, which are the same ones found in the guides.

For Ancient Egypt we watched a video of a shaduf.  There was an option of making one, but we didn’t get to it.  We also made a salt dough map of Egypt, which everyone helped sculpt and paint.  We also made a model of the Tabernacle (printed on cardstock, cut out, and glued together).

For the Middle Ages, we didn’t get to any projects…although we did a few science projects at least.  lol  However, some of the ideas were to have a medieval style meal and make a cardboard castle.  I’m still hoping to get to that medieval dinner this summer and they could easily make the castle on their own!  Pinterest is a great resource for help with these projects or coming up with additional ideas.  The SCM guides really just give you a few suggestions for inspiration, then you are left with lots of creative license to carry it out.
