I just wanted to recommend this math program here. It is very CM friendly, and in just a few weeks, my kids are doing leaps and bounds in math facts and understanding math concepts. It is truly unlike any other math program out there! It was recommended by an Ambleside school workshop that I attended.
This looks great! I have just emailed them with a whole list of questions so hopefully I will get a reply soon. I feel a spark of hope again. I have struggled and struggled with my 3rd grader throughout her math career and I have two younger ones starting Math programs in the fall. Hopefully this will get my youngers started out on the right foot and get my oldest on track.
Thanks for posting! I wouldn’t have heard of it otherwise.
I just got an email from him in reply. He has offered me a free month’s trial of the online program. I am about to call now to get it set up. I am so happy that I’ll be able to try this out for a month this summer to make sure it is what we really need before committing to purchase in the fall!
Sorry to keep posting about this, but I wanted to let you know that they are offering the free online program for the month of June. This way you can try it out in summer and see if you want to commit to buy in Fall. Call the # on their website and they’ll get you started!
I have bought this program twice. Once several years ago when it was only cd-rom based and once as the online program ~ 5 months ago. There are many things I loved about it, but it does not track where your kids are and there are review items to keep up with on your own. Because of this, it didn’t work for our family and where we are right now. If it were able to track progress and what needs to be reviewed (like TT perhaps), I would have kept it.
I am actually doing the book one with my 8 year old, and my 12 year old. My 12 year old is flying through it and will be ready for the second book very soon. He likes the way it approaches the math facts and wishes he had this when trying to memorize all these years. He has always struggled with memorization, so this is really filling in the gaps for him as well as me. I am feeling confident that we will be doing algebra after the third Professor B book very easily by next spring. My son is excited about that, and he is usually not one to get too excited about school things. 🙂
Missceegee, we do TT as well. That is my son’s independent math, and the Professor B is strictly guided my me. He is showing so much progress by doing it this way. I have the Professor B in book form, and am just taking my time and enjoying the chart games and learning strategies with my kids.
Not sure about the online program, but I am assuming it is the same as book? I hope you all like it as much as me. Keep me posted on your kids’ progress!
Teaching Textbooks is TT. It is a computer math program that kids can easily do by themselves and parents can check it from the grade book included that tracks their student’s progress.
simple home–I’m glad to hear you’ve had success with the books…and with your 8 and 12 year olds. I found books 1 and 2 used, and I was hoping to do them with my soon to be 11 year old. (and the Algebra with my 15 year old) Your report is so encouraging!
It’s funny, because I’ve really considered using TT with them as well
So happy for your succes–you’re a really good mom to your kiddos, and you’re a good friend to us for sharing!
How is his approach to math facts different? My 11yo autistic ds has been struggling to memorize addition facts for nearly two years with extremely little success. I just don’t know what to use with him, and math is such a frustration for him.
I want to apologize if my review sounded too negative. It’s just I don’t want to keep up with doing X number of things for review. I would have preferred if the program did that for me. With other responsibilities right now, it was too much for me. I will let someone else who is effectively using Prof. B describe it in detail for you.
For math facts, I can HIGHLY recommend Rapid Recall by Little Giant Steps. It’s been the only thing that has helped my dd10. It’s pricey, but I use page protectors & dry erase markers so my younger 3 will be able to use the same workbook. We use the flashcard cd-rom (visual input cd) on the computer and this is 100% handled by my kids. I just check the answers. DD10 has finished add and is doing mult. and sub. now. DS7 just finished add and is moving onto sub.
Thanks, simplehome, for letting us know about Professor B! My DS just finished up with TTgrade 4. I’ve been contemplating what to use as a supplement this summer; Looks like the free 30 day trial will be perfect! Since he’s had a bit of trouble with long division, the video was great – thanks for sharing, Blessedmom !
