I have been printing SCM consumables from PDFs for the past eight years, usually at our local Staples or Office Max, and had never had a problem with this. I also print our SCM picture study portfolio prints, copies of the Shakespeare plays from SCM, and occasionally a teacher book. I have now had issues at both Staples and Office Max during my past 3-4 visits. The problem appears to be with the understanding of copyright laws. Each time I have been questioned I have referred the associate to the first page of the PDF where it states that permission is granted to the homeschool family to make copies for the immediate household. I am then told that the issue is not with me making copies of the material but the problem is that the store is making a profit from the printing of the material. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
I am at a loss because I use the consumable PDFs for both my boys and that is why I chose the PDFs in the first place. I have a small printer at home but the expense of ink would be huge if I tried to print the language arts workbooks, Shakespeare plays, portfolio prints, etc.
Our Co-op printed picture study pictures (from Wikiart) at Office Max. I don’t think there was any issue. We buy used copies of Shakespeare plays…pretty sure this is cheaper than printing and they’ll have a nice collection when they move out.
If you choose to print at home, black and white laser printers are much more economical for printing large documents. Although they do have a higher cost up front.
If you get in touch through our contact form we would be happy to supply you with a permission letter that you can give to an office store that is reluctant to print for you.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Best Value Copy Online. It is cheaper and better quality paper than any local spot. I use for all kinds of scm and other materials for home and for my co-op.
They have never questioned copyright in the 3+ years I’ve used them.
