Hi there! We are starting SCM this Fall for my son almost 6. I have my cart loaded with everything we should need for the first term. I would like to save some money where possible by getting some resources in download form, but I am leery I might really miss the printed versions. We are doing all that is recc for 1st grade. Are there any of you who are finished with “1st grade” and can give me your opinion on which resources you preferred printed or download worked just as well? Thanks!

I consider a few factors when I’m deciding.
- Will I be needing it again with other DC? Things like copywork books or Visits to Africa are nice as PDF files, since I have multiple children using them. If you just have the one child, this won’t be a big factor for you. If you have younger ones, you may want to consider PDFs for consumables.
- Will I be having them read it or reading it aloud? And which do we prefer to read from, a PDF file on a tablet or a hard copy? I often prefer hard copies myself, but I have some of both.
- For the teacher guides, I prefer hard copies and I think that’s all I have…Although you could easily print a copy from the PDF too. I like a copy so I can pencil in notes and reminders as I plan.
- Do I plan on re-selling it when I’m done? Although SCM does allow you to re-sell the PDF files, most copies don’t.
- The Picture Study Portfolio sets would be nice to have pre-printed if you are using them. While we haven’t used these, I think it’d be nice to have them displayed around the school area!

Myself personally, I really prefer having a book in my hand. However, this year, due to finances, we’re using as many free books from Archive.org as possible. I am printing off the pages we need, and placing them in a duotang binder, so that I can still sit and read them, and have them in my hand. It’s not the same as having the book, but it’s definitely better than having to look at a screen.
Now, some might say that by the time you buy ink and paper to print things out, it’s just as cheap to buy the books. However, the difference is, I can print as needed, which spreads the cost out over the entire year, which is definitely easier on the budget than having to buy all the books up front.

I, too, prefer a book in my hands… not to mention I am terrible to lose track of electronic files, especially as old computers die. I back up onto an external hard drive, but I don’t generally transfer to a new computer due to memory constraints. Out of sight, out of mind for me, which is in turn a waste of money. Maybe if I kept a running list?
As for printing, I invested in a B&W laser printer and it is so much better than ink jet! I also got a case of paper from Staples for $5 after mail in rebate (and I did remember to turn it in – got the $21 back on a Visa card that DH and I used for a date night a couple months later 🙂 ).
