Other than the obvious pros of prime over Netflix, how does the tv/movie selection compare? We have Netflix and doing both is not an option for our budget, so I was looking into switch to prime.
Some titles are the same. What Prime has for my kids that we watch a lot is Mister Rogers and Little Pim, foreign language for young children. Otherwise Netflix has Magic School Bus and 19 Kids and Counting and the rest seem about the same as far as what we watch.
I use Prime more for some of the “free” (read: included) movies. We don’t buy anything off of it. We also have Netflix for other movies and TV series. Some are the same, but mostly different, at least of the things we want to watch. We watch Sci-Fi, stuff like Bear Grylls and other survival/nature type shows, some family movies, and then I have my list that I like (the girly movies that hubby won’t watch with me LOL).
We used to have Netflix only, then we got both, then we ditched Netflix over the summer, but my kids had been begging me to restart Netflix, so I just did a few weeks ago. I’m not sure how much overlap there is, but I think my kids prefer Netflix (they are 16-9). They don’t watch a lot of TV, but like Myth Busters and more science type shows. Oh and they have found horders and ultimate cheapskates on one of them and have been intrigued with those for some reason. Not much help, but I do really like having the Amazon shipping option a lot and think it would really be hard to go back to. We have never rented a movie via Amazon either, but it’s nice to have that option since we don’t have cable or a dish.
I think they just have different stuff and it depends what you want to watch. We like the buying option on prime as well as the free shipping. Plus it’s cheaper by a little bit. We don’t watch enough of either to really be super concerned with selection I guess.
We are trying to figure out what to do with these right now! We have had Netflix for about a year and DH has been looking at Amazon Prime. We searched the movies last night but I like Netflix selections better, but maybe it is just because that is what I am used to. We may keep both although we are really trying to cut spending and Amazon is cheaper of the two.
Netflix seems to have more things we would watch, and it also seems to have more educational related documentaries/shows….but we’ve had it longer and might just not have found our way around Prime as much (which we have mostly for the shipping…)
I like that Netflix has the “who’s watching”/profiles now too—-I just wish that the watchlist was ALL they put on the screen unless it was the master account holder’s profile….maybe one day!
For each of these services, I find it better to find selections on the Internet sites to add to our Netflix watchlist or Prime library than to look on the tv (many times I have to send my dc to the other room until I find something to watch, due to some of the inappropriate graphic art of some titles). Plus you can read the reviews online, something I wished I had done on more than one occasion. I find that many of the movie selections on streaming are not up to my (high) standards. But there are a few Shirley Temple and older Disney we have enjoyed. If you have a kindle, there are some e-book titles you can borrow for free, limited to one per month. I have used this some. If you order much from Amazon, the 2 day shipping is really nice, and you don’t have to order $25 minimum each time. If it were up to me, I would go with only Prime and watch whatever they have, but dh wants to keep Netflix too. And I do enjoy watching 19 Kids and Counting on there.
We have both, but prefer Netflix for viewing purposes and Amazon Prime for free 2-day shipping. We have AppleTVs hooked up to both televisions, and unfortunately Amazon doesn’t stream through the AppleTV. I can’t see our entire family gathering around the computer to watch a movie! That’s what works for us.
