My preschooler just turned 5 and wants to work on math independently during playtime. She can’t read yet, and I prefer to avoid workbooks, but not sure what to use. Any ideas?
My kiddos like to use counters- pennys, beans, buttons, etc. They work on one to one correspondence, addition and subtraction, sorting, etc. Also, the book Family Math by Jean Kerr Stenmark is great for these types of activities, and more.
I have used almost all of the manipulatives from Saxon math that I bought about 8 years ago with all my children. The manipulatives we use daily/weekly at the kindergarten level are:
Big calendar
Clock with movable hands
Counting Bears (make up stories, etc)
Blocks/stacking cubes
Beans
Abacus
Dice
Coins
Magnetic Shape puzzles
Pegboards with rubber bands
100’s chart
Any good book of math games or a video like “Mathtacular” can help you teach games/activities that your kindergartner can then pursue in her free time.
I often find my five year old clapping hands for ‘odds’ and lap for ‘evens’ or counting by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, etc…things we practiced once or twice but he meditates on and practices because they interest him :-).
