I have a question about the prepared dictation that I am doing with both of my boys, ages 10 & just turned 9.  I don’t think I am doing it right at this point.

When my started Spelling Wisdom Volume 1 they could do the entire dictation in one day.  They would study the new words, look at the dictation, and then I would dictate it to them one phrase or sentence at a time.  At some point I started to have them do one phrase or sentence a day.  This means that a single dictation is worked on each day one sentence at a time; or even half a sentence.  The reason is that spelling isn’t their strength.  There would be enough ‘difficult spelling words to study in each phrase’ that one phrase often seems about right to learn.

    This isn’t correct; is it?

Am I supposed to be doing the entire dictation in one day?  What happens when they become quite long?  Do they study all of the dictation at once?

I am a bit confused on how this is supposed to look as the dictations lengthen.

    Thank you!

I wanted to clarify that they will learn half the dication and have that dictated to them.  Then the next learning period they will learn the second half and have that dictated to them.

I am a bit confused on how to handle the dication as they become longer, and the spelling becomes more difficult.

From what I’ve read, and from what has worked for us at home, I’d slow down the pace to make sure they are able to easily read the portion that they are going to prepare.

If their reading abilities mean that they are needing to work on that, too, it’s not time for these sentences.

I noticed that I had to be okay with putting it aside for a time after the first few lessons.  My son needed for time with shorter samples.  You are shortening them by cutting them in half, but they should be quite easy to read, or you’ll need to work with other sentences.

As I understand it, reading needs to really be solid before pursuing studied dictation, or it will be frustrating.  You might find a reader, or simpler sentences to implement dictation.  Once you notice that it has become easy, go back and try again with SW.

My ds10 reads at a high school level, and my ds9 reads around a 5th grade level or higher. They can read the sentences very easily.

Writing, on the other hand, has been a much slower process than reading. They are able to learn the spelling in around 5 minutes. Each sentence though can easily have 5 words to learn to spell.

How does dictation work for each of you?

Should I have them study it for two days or more before dictation?

You could have them study for two days or more. Another dictation based program, Simply Spelling, has them spend a week on the same passage. You might also consider letting them type dictation.
