My 15 yo dd is finishing Masterbooks’ Math Lessons for a Living Education Level 6 this spring. She will technically be in 9th grade in the fall, and I would like to start her in a pre-algebra program. I do not like the Masterbooks option. It is very wordy and she is dyslexic. It also would take 2 years to complete. She has learning delays, but she is progressing well. She does not do well with a rigorous style math curriculum, though, and she can’t process a lot of new information quickly. She takes her time, and needs a lot of review. I’ve considered Math-U-See, but I really don’t want to spend over $150, if possible.

Are there any good options for me to consider?

My dyslexic son is doing well with video text. It doesn’t review a lot, but math builds. So, for example, he is reviewing basic equations and basic graphing as he is graphing absolute value equations. It is set up to only do 1/2 the problems first (like 6 or so currently). You assign the rest if needed. There are little quizzes after a few lessons. You can go back and reteach if needed.  It is mastery based .

Memoria Press is republishing it. I have the original disks and books I bought used several years ago. I think they are mostly just reformatting it. I can answer more questions.

If you can teach math you might not need the videos. We mostly don’t use them. I use the notes to teach on a white board. It is very logical and clear. You might be able to find it used. Also without DVDs the first module wouldn’t cost much. I think A is the prealgebra level. We easily got through A and B in 1 year. I think even going very slowly you’d get through A and B.

    Good Morning, Melissa…

I’m just finishing Math-U-See’s Pre-Algebra with my last student, and will be selling the textbook and the student workbook (clean/unused – my student did her work in a separate notebook) for $48, if you’re interested.  I have the dvd’s that accompany the course, but this year we were having trouble playing them on our device (I did play them before with 2 other students)…I can include the dvds for free in the event you’re able to use them.  The $48 price includes media mail shipping.  I do NOT have the test booklet.

Also, if you’re interested, Ruralmama mentioned VideoText algebra….I have used this with another child of mine, and had bought them used a number of years ago….I have these for sale, as well.  I do want to let you know that the some of the books’ binding (in the first module set)are starting to crack (because the binding was glued), but all pages are there.  I’m selling them in two sets – Modules A, B, and C together as a set, and then the last three modules (D, E, and F) together.  I’m asking $150 for each set, plus the cost of media mail.

If you’re interested in either of these, please email me at pom fish (seven – the number, not the word) at fair point dot net….no spaces.  (No pressure, but I’m  planning on putting them in a booksale event in early June.)
