5heartsathome, I think that is a very insightful observation. And at this season coming up of homeschool conferences, used book sales, etc., it is especially good to remember that.
Thank you Mysterious. 🙂 I think that part of the reason we “over-supplement” is because we are so passionate and enthusiastic about teaching and learning alongside our beloved children, that we don’t want to miss anything. But, less is more. Although CM spreads the feast, it’s done in a way that doesn’t overwhelm. I think it’s important to be confident in the fact that, as parents, we will recognize when they are ready for more and then it is, at that point, that we add more because they are ready and willing.
Yes, 5heartsathome, I plan to address the tendency to overload our children’s education. Thanks for the specific points and what could be helpful to others!
So thrilled that you are putting together a workshop on this very important topic!
Would you believe that I was just about to post a question this morning on SCM regarding how moms with larger families “fit it all in” ? I was overjoyed to read your post, Sonya. Trying to “fit it all in” can zap out much of the joy of homeschooling.
I will be praying for this for you! Thank you so much.
I read this http://www.jasonlsanders.com/2014/01/23/would-that-be-okay/ today and thought of this discussion. The article is a little harsh, and not necessarily aimed at homeschoolers, but it seems applicable. Like 5heartsathome said, we are so excited for our children we can easily lose track of the progression and ultimate goal. What if we put together the best curriculum and our kids were the best artists, knew tons of poems by heart, had beautiful handwriting, could name all the countries and so on… but what if they never loved learning, never had fond memories of school with mom or dad, never learned to work around the house and be a servant, or worse what if we didn’t leave time for HIM who is most important…Forgot our first love. Oh, this struck my heart. I needed this…hopefully it can be an encouragment to others.
This thread is still making me smile everytime I read it. Such a timely topic….
I makes me think of the extracurricular activity overload on little ones as well. We count church on Wednesday nights as one activity and then only add in one other activity at the most and I try to make it an outdoor activity. For example, this semester’s activity is horseback riding lessons. This is just how my family does it. It may not work for another family.
I would just like to encourage mothers who feel overloaded to let go of everything extra and just see how it feels. You can always re-enroll in a activity next year or add back whatever it was that you cut out. Just try it. 🙂
I loved the Margin article as well. The day before she posted a wonderful article entitled “Civilizing Our Children {Through Love, Compassion, and Relationship}” that turned into a lovely bible study for me. I had a very rouge parenting day the day before and that article helped me to calm my soul.
So thankful for you ladies’ prayers! I’ve been researching this topic for months and have so many thoughts floating around, but nothing would “get in line.” Ever since you all have started praying, the outline and structure has started to fall into place and a somewhat coherent presentation is starting to take shape. Praise God!
I actually just came on here to see if, by some miracle, you were coming to the HEAV Convention this June in Richmond and saw that you ARE! I am elated. Seriously. It’s been a rough day and this just brings an enormous smile to my face. This topic is something I would be so blessed to hear about and even more so from you!
Sonya, I had the honor of hearing your presentation last weekend at the Teach Them Diligently conference. It’s neat to see now how much it was prayed over. This talk was the highlight of the entire conference for me (aside from you answering all my questions- I was the one who kept returning to your booth with my notebook full of questions). You did a fantastic job, I especially loved the questions you recommended we ask ourselves in making decisions about our schedules. I have already let go of one regular thing on our schedule and am praying over the rest of our schedule. I am committed to simplifying the materials we use and get rid of the busy work. The back packing and pie stories will also be cemented in my mind to remind me of the main ideas you presented. Thank you so much!
Ladies, whenever they record this and make it available i highly recommend it.
