Do you all keep a prayer journal for yourselves or just a journal? What does it look like?

I keep a journal.. under normal (living at parents house is being built nothing normal right now) situations I write in my journal at least 1 or 2 times a week.

I use it for manythings though. Not just me, and God I use it to write about my boys and then every Aug/Sept. I write a letter to them telling them about the good, bad, nice and not so nice times in there own lives over the last year. It also starts with one page of height, weight etc. And a list of I think 10 question I ask the same ones every year and write there answer. It really shows how they grow mentally!

I want them to know that I think of them daily and I write about them and pray for them. So when I write the letters I tell them of the prayers I asked for and if tey have come forward yet.

Anyway that’s how and what I use mine for!

My journal is completely ridiculous. Someday my children will read it (or the whole collection) and laugh out loud, but they will know it belonged to me! 🙂 I buy one of those cheap one dollar versions with the lined paper and a pretty picture on the front. Then, I carry it every where I go. It has a grocery list on one page, a two page prayer on another, and a to do list after that. It may seem random and I’ll admit, I wish I had the ability to have a journal just for prayer. BUT that’s not me and that’s not really the way my life works. So, as I write that my daughter learned to ride her bike yesterday (WOOHOO!), I feel free to break into a prayer and then write that I need to buy toilet paper. I’m holding tightly to the idea that everything is sacred and nothing secular and holding loosely to everything else! 🙂

I have one! Actually, I have kept a prayer journal since before high school. I use pretty journals (Tuesday mornings usually has some for less) and then I usually pick a verse out of my Bible reading and copy it. Then I journal my thoughts and then my prayer for the day. I also use it to take notes on different spiritual books I’m reading or to record my answers to a Bible Study I’m working on (currently Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World).

I feel like it is very difficult for me to pray without writing it out. The very act of writing somehow untangles my thoughts and helps me work through things. Otherwise, I get very distracted and even forget anything I prayed for.

I also keep a journal for each of my children. I write in it at least every birthday and Christmas and highlight some of their strengths and weaknesses of the previous year. Ideally, I’d like to record their lives more often and even allow them to “write me back” in the journal. I communicate much better on paper and there’s so much that never gets said–this is my way to work on that.

    Grace & Peace
