I am thinking of using Power in Your Hands with my 9th grade son. I was hoping to get a quick review of sorts before I purchase. I’ve looked at the samples, and I like what I’ve seen, but I would love to hear from families who are currently using this program before I purchase it.
I don’t have an ax to grind with the program but I felt the time we spent could’ve been used more wisely with narrations, written and oral. My sone began using it at the beginning of this school year and I’m sure he learned something (I haven’t actually asked him, but I can). I have enjoyed Brave Writer for myself and have, so far, found the Help for High School a much better fit. There is some pre-reading to learn how the program works, or I should say, how her methodology works, but I found that my son was able to get to writing on a topic, of his choice, faster. Hope that makes sense.
And her editing ideas has been the most helpful to me. I’m using them for my dc narrations. I should say, I’m trying to use them. We’ve had a lot going on so I haven’t had a ton of time to spend on them for revisions.
I know now your asking about The Power on Your Hands but I don’t know if I could give it an honest review. I did not work closely with my son so I’m not completely sure about it. We also shelved Jump In from Sharon Watson as well. My 7th grader was using it but is now back to only oral and written narrations.
I hope this helps. Nothing against it but now we aren’t using it.
We have this on tap for Makayla for next year (10th). But we also own Brave Writer Help for High School. We will see which ends up a better fit. Right now Makayla is using One Year Adventure Novel. The goal for next year is to work on nonfiction writing.
After looking over many, many writing programs I decided to use Sharon Watson’s creative writing program for a homeschool coop. It has been well received and enjoyed by the students and I have received several positive comments from parents as well. There has also been a marked improvement in writing ability.
The creative writing program is well planned and incremental. The assignments are clear and reasonable in length. The book uses many examples and a bit of humor. I am so impressed with the program that I plan to use the non-fiction curriculum next year.
