We will be doing a year of Little House this next year for our Kindergarten year. I would love to read some poetry relating to the American West, L.I. Wilder, pioneer days, or Little House on the Prairie. Any suggestions?
I am reading the Little House series to my 5th grader this year and we are enjoying it so much. I have a few resources that I purchased to go along with the books.
“A Little House Reader”
A collection of Writings by Laura Ingalls Wilder
I hopped over to Amazon and saw quite a few copies starting at $4.30 (new for under $5.00). This book includes many poems written by different members of the Ingalls family. It also has many wonderful pictures of the family, their homes, the town, Pa’s fiddle, etc…
Another great resource is “The World of Little House” by Collins and Eriksson.
There are many of these over at Amazon starting at $0.01.
There’s also a music project called “Pa’s Fiddle” that has recreated the music played by “pa” from what was mentioned in the books and music from the time period:
This is probably not what you want because they are not pioneer type poets, but many famous American poets lived during this time period – Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Emily Dickinson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Robert Frost – just to name a few. Sorry to not be more helpful. 🙁
Another music recording — Musical Memories of Laura Ingalls Wilder (Hear and Learn Publications) — Diana Waring was involved in putting it together. It is the songs they talk about in the books. I don’t know if it is available anymore to buy, but I found it at our library. Maybe you will too.
