There are a list of poetry from scm guide.  I don’t know which one I should pick for my 7.5 and 5 year-old.  Any suggestion?  Thank you!

We don’t study any one poet right now, we just read out of “Poems old and New” and love it!  We grabbed a used copy at our local library sale for $1.

I suggest the same and Laura. I wonder when it’s a good time to start truly studying a handful of poets yearly?

I tried doing a poet study with 7 & 6 yos at the time, and we just didn’t do well with it.  I am going to try again this next schoolyear.  They will be 9 1/2 & 8.  Otherwise, we have just been doing the same poem book as Laura.  My 5yo will not do it next school year, though she will turn 6 in Nov.  I am waiting to start “real school” with her 1 extra year.  She’d never sit for a poetry study or anything else.  😛

This year we did read When We Were Very Young by Milne, which is one of his poetry books. That was really appropriate and the full color illustrations were engaging and sweet. Otherwise, we love Favorite Poems Old and New, especially as it corresponds to Outdoor Secrets.

I have checked “A Child’s Garden of Verses” by Robert Louis Stevenson suggested by the guide and it seems simple and easy to read!  Does anyone read this one to your children?  What do you think?

We read it and loved it.  I don’t think that poetry study has to be hard.  You can see the recommended biography stories about the poets listed in the Bookfinder.  The main thing is that your children hear it and learn to enjoy it. =)

Yes, we loved reading Robert Louis Stevenson poems.  We didn’t read the whole book, but we did read several selections from “A Child’s Garden of verses”.  So many well loved poems!  I love “My Shadow”, “The Land of Counterpane” and “A Good Play” and many, many others from my own childhood.

Other options (though more silly, but we’ve loved) are Dennis Lee or Shel Silverstein.

I think we will be doing Robert Frost this year with my 6th grader and 3rd grader, as well as selections from a variety of others.

Our beginning poetry study came through both Poems Old and New (Wow! I wish I’d paid $1 for it!), and the sweet times we spent with Emma Serl’s Primary Language Lessons.

I think Poems Old and New is a good choice plus I will use The Outdoor Secrets next year.  Glad that I just reserved it from my local library, I can take a look before I purchase it.  Many Thanks!

Oh, yes, we did read the Milne poem books and Stevenson’s poems.  Those were awesome for all ages.

My children still read A Childs Garden of Verses. They have memorized several.

This term we are focusing on Robert Frost because my son found a biography of him at the library that he wanted me to read. I had planned to study Milne this term but we changed it. The book is Robert Frost: Boy with Promises to Keep and the Author slips my mind but I discovered that it is in the book finder. My children love this book! It has spawned many rabbit trails like listening to a civil war folk song, trying to learn how to whistle, character discussions, and most recently all of my children made ABC copybooks like the one Rob makes in his book. It is definitely a living book!
