OK< so as a newbie of CM, I have to confess, I don’t enjoy peotry and frankly don’t get it most of the time. Never saw the beauty or enjoyed it. Of couse, I don’t want to display that to my children, but I am hesitant to present this new poetry study as something exciting. If I’ve never been taught to appreciate and value it, I’d like to grow in it, before I teach it with my kids? But it’s a very busy season right now, I don’t know that I can make myself LIKE it.?
I’m in the same boat with you…not even that much of a newbie here! We’ve been CM style homeschoolers for over 4 years now and I still don’t like it very much. I had a Shel Silverstein book on my shelf that I kept passing over because it wasn’t refined enough I thought…well I decided to use it today for poetry study and the kids were laughing and begging for more. Yes there are some poems of Shel’s I won’t read to them, but most of them are just plain funny! I just had to lower my expectations about the around the fire poetry recitals which will never happen in my house and have some fun! Hope this helps!
I was never a huge poetry fan, myself, but over the years I have learned to love it. I have my children read poems daily and I just love to listen to them. Now my oldest isn’t crazy about it, either, he thinks it’s a lot of wasted words (he thinks you should just say what you mean) but after a couple of years having him read daily, he’s coming around. Now he likes to think on what he read, not just get through it. He prefers to read one poet at a time, where as my other two like variety.
Sometimes it’s like a puzzle, trying to unravel what is being expressed by the poet, and that can be fun. Sometimes it’s just fun to laugh at the silly ones.
Anyway, as someone who wasn’t crazy about it, or knew how to incorporate it into our day, I wouldn’t miss it now for anything!
Bookworm (aka, Michelle) is the one whose encouragement & enthusiasm has helped in this area. She mentioned at one time that they read daily (couldn’t live w/o it) and now I kind of feel the same way.
But, it’s not something anyone has to love, so don’t sweat it. Obviously your dc will be fine. It’s just one of those things that does bring joy to the day.
I feel this way about classical music…bleech! I wasn’t a fan of poetry before CM, but I too started with Shel Silverstein, which was a great intro. Now I just plug away with Favorite Poems Old and New. Many are short and fairly painless. I don’t pretend to “get it” or to enjoy it if I don’t. In fact, I usually just read it and let the kids discuss it. Sometimes all they need is a facilitator, not my unsolicited opinion. If I find a poet we enjoy, I read as much as I can from that poet, just like I would with a novel.
My strategy with classical music is to try to learn along with the kids. I think they’ll appreciate knowing the popular pieces if they hear it in a jingle or an elevator someday, lol. Same idea with poetry. I bet someday your kids (or you!) will hear/see something and you’ll have this shared family experience of remembering a certain poem or poet.
