I would like to buy a beautiful poetry anthology for my family. I’ve seen a lot of newer children’s poetry that I don’t like. I am looking for classic poems in a nice format. I would prefer classy, attractive illustrations as well. We tried to read a very modern poetry book today. The poems were twaddle and the illustrations –aagh!—just yucky!

    Any recommendations?

I love the Children’s Treasury of Verse, illustrated by Patricia Ludlow.  Not sure if it’s still in print… I picked it up from a thrift store.  Both my sister and SIL have found it second hand too.  It has lots of classic and traditional poems.

My other favourite anthology is A Child’s Anthology of Poetry (edited by Elizabeth Hauge Sword).  There aren’t any illustrations but my 6 and 8 year olds enjoy it.  I read a poem every night from it.

Helen Ferris’ Favorite Poems Old and New has lovely illustrations and a multitude of poetry. Recommended by Sonya!

Although not filled with illustartions, contains wonderful poetry just the same: Poems Every Child Should Know by Mary E. Burt

We love Helen Ferris’ Favorite Poems Old and New here as well. For my youngest, I have A Child’s Book of Poems by Gyo Fugikawa and The World of Christopher Robin by A.A. Milne.

Well, I just went and bought the Helen Ferris one online.    I can’t believe how many poems are in it!  I love the book depository.  Free shipping!
