Can Plutarch be started at any grade?  During any time in history?  We are in Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Reformation so would reading Plutarch this year confuse any of us?  And if not, what lives should we start with?

    Thank you!

Plutarch is usually started about 4th grade/year.  It is less a study of history and more a study of character through the lives of famous Greek and Roman leaders. Plutarch paired many of them up and compared the good vs. the bad traits of the leaders. Charlotte Mason used Plutarch in this way – as character study.

It doesn’t really matter what Life you start with, you can just start where you want. Now, having said that, there are Plutarch Lives and then there are Plutarch Lives. =) Age appropriateness matters, so there are also children’s versions available. 😉

If you want some hand-holding in the form of open and go, 12 week lessons, check out the free guides with text on AmblesideOnline here.  If you prefer a book with the same stuff as the website check out Amazon here. Anne White suggests that Publicola is the easiest to start with.

We don’t always use the guides these days and enjoy his stories. Did you know that Plutarch is where Shakespeare got his inspiration for many of his plays? He used the North translation. The most common one used today is Dryden’s translation.
