My dd in year three is just about to finish Gamma Math U See. We planned to start Delta next week. Getting her to do math is like pulling teeth!!

It is a constant struggle with her. And she is constantly forgetting conversion facts and multiplication facts. Doing math for her actually seems painful. She hates it. She often just stares at her math page and doodles on the page. We have talked about this ad nauseum.

Should I switch to Right Start with her or do you think that it is too late?

I want her to have a really good foundation before Algebra but just don’t know how to get her there.

You could do the placement test on the Rightstart website to see where you figure she would start. There are transition lessons to help you both get used to the Rightstart way of doing things, and to get used to the abacus.

Obviously jumping curriculums isn’t generally a great idea – but sometimes sticking with something that isn’t working is worse. I think Rightstart is great. The games can be enjoyable.

I take it your daughter is about 8 or 9? We switched to Rightstart when my son was about to turn 8. He tested into level B – which is a starter level. I haven’t regretted it, even though it would be considered that we are ‘behind’.

Look at the placement tests. Then look at the past webinars for one titled something like ‘Teaching Level C’ – for whatever level you figure is right. There are webinars on the games etc too. See what you think.

Lishie, my I suggest the Living Math Forum Yahoo group.  There are a wealth of ideas even if all you do is peruse the archives.  However, there are some very helpful people who might give you ideas to help make math a fun and interesting indeavor for your young lady.
