We’ll be moving from US History to World History next year. I’ve been looking over the books we’ll be using and there are a bazillion names in them that I have no idea how to pronounce! I’ve found some pronunciation sites but when I type in one of the words/names nothing comes up for the ones I need. Does anyone have a website or pronunciation guide they can recommend? Any help will be greatly appreciated. 🙂
I have the same problem. My husband laughs many times at me when I try. I have gone to audio books especially for Ancients. We did Mystery of History and assigned independent reading for each student. Also we did the audios of SCM Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors. That helped to hear it said correctly there first. Otherwise, I just use Google and type the word and pronunciation.
Ancient’s were really hard for me. I used audio books when I could because it was tough. I am not sure what I will do when we cycle back. My sister used MOH for ancients, so I might see if I can borrow her audio copy.
English not being my native language I have the opposite problem! I do pretty good w/foreign pronunciation but I still stumble on some English words! We just found out recently that you don’t pronounce the T in often.
I also struggle with this. Dictionary.com has been helpful for me as well, or I just google the name along with the word pronunciation.
I absolutely love books that have the pronunciation in the texts. MOH was pretty good about it, as is the SOTW activity guide. Librivox can be another help if you are reading an older book. Unless it’s a major character in a book, I usually just stumble through the pronunciation. lol
Thank you all sooo much! This might sound horrible but I’m glad to know I’m not the only one (which I totally thought I was)! I’ve checked out your resources and feel much better. A million thank yous and Merry Christmas to you all! 🙂
