Hi, hope you all are having a wonderful summer so far. I know we are all busy planning our school year soon. I am trying to get my head on straight after our much needed vacation. Now that we are home let the planning begin. I am wondering what all you do with a 7 year old girl. She isn’t reading a lot yet, she does enjoy it just now going fast at it. Secondly, anyone have a good way of teaching math facts? Multiplication mostly. I have a high school age son who really is a challenge when it comes to completing his work on time. He is still finishing Science from last year. I would welcome any help. He would like to do something with DNR or Agriculture. His schedule so far is: Math-u-see, AgiScience, United States history, I don’t know for English or lit yet. Thanks for the help.
Just a quick idea – some of my kids have really done well with Multiplication in a Flash to learn the harder to remember multiplication facts. All have improved over time with Xtramath.org too (free).
My older daughter is 7, too, and still isn’t reading well. Here are things we have planned for the fall.
Family Subjects
-Science: We are going to be learning Anatomy this year, and I am going to have her work on a lapbook. (She loves to cut, paste, and color).
-History: We are studying Modern Times. She’ll sit for our spine reading and throughout the year I’ll grab shorter books from the library to read with her that supplement what we’re reading.
-Scripture memory
-Geography: We’re going to read the Complete Book of Marvels this year. Hopefully I can encourage the kids to keep a notebook of the places we’ve been and the things we’ve learned. Still hashing that out. She also does Sheppard Software to learn countries. Last year she learned all the States and Capitals. This year we’re working on African and South American nations.
-Poetry study, composer study, artist study, and Shakespeare
Her own subjects:
-Math: She and her sister both do Math Mammoth. We’ll keep plugging along with that. I also have her do XtraMath for math facts. She’s working on addition right now.
-Language Arts: She’ll continue working on Explode the Code and reading aloud to me every day. This year I am going to start English Lessons through Literature with her. I am going to have her listen to the literature selections on audio.
-Music: She’s going to start either piano or guitar this year. (I have a great piano program that I know she’d like, but she seems really interested in playing guitar like daddy!)
Aside from those things, she’ll keep up with her Nature Journal, do a religion study with me in preparation for her sacraments, and she’ll be working on badge work for American Heritage Girls. We also do a memory co-op once a week, and all of the kids will be learning the same things, so that will also enhance our family studies.
Hope those give you some ideas.
