Ok – generally I have all my planning done for the next year before now – but this year I’m struggling a bit. Can I ask for thoughts? I don’t want to over-load us.
Right now, I’m thinking on Delta, who will turn 10 in October and would be in “Grade 5” (for whatever that is worth.) He also seems to have dyslexia – so it affects his reading, spelling, math, handwriting, ability to “write” (ie, can’t figure out what to right), and even his speech to a small amount. He reads at about a grade 3 level….
Overall – AO Year 3 (with my Canadian modifications) – probably only aiming to finish 2 terms to allow for time to work on areas where he is struggling. – he would be using audiobooks where possible. (He really enjoys the AO history books and other “readings”) – this covers history, science, literature, picture study, etc.
Math: Finish RightStart Level C (we are over 1/2 way through. Maybe start Level D, depending on how things go. (I hope so…)
Spelling – All About Spelling – Level 2. (Studied dictation was a flop for him, AAS seems to be helping.)
Reading Help – hoping AAS will help (it has for some people.) I am getting Reading Reflex this summer, so I really hope it will give me some ideas….
Writing – “Writing with Ease” – haven’t done the placement test yet – maybe level 2, probably level 1. I’m not sure on this one. It looks like it will be a good resource – and Delta asked (a year ago mind you) for me to teach him how to write. We started that process last year by starting spelling – but I think this might help. I’m just worried about overloading him….
Science – AO Year 3 has some readings, but also suggests doing an Apologia course or Science Lab in a Supermarket (OOP) with some experiments. I’ve been thinking of adding in the Dr. Wile’s pilot elementary course for him (only available outside the US) – he has liked the bit of experimental type science we did in the past – just afraid of overloading him…
Foreign Language – ASL – We’ve been using the Signing Time Videos – they are just longer than I’d like, and I’d like to get into more actual language – the lifeprint site is all I really have….
Foreign Language – German – I don’t know what to do for this. The First Steps videos are so long…and the kids get lost at some point. We’ve been using them for years now. Nothing else I’ve tried seems to work very well either. Suggestions? We have the “tell me more” computer program (the kids haven’t ever really used it), I have a very old Learnables (we only tried it for a bit – it has promise but seems a bit boring…), We did Pimsleur for a while – kids learned a few phrases, but that was it… ages ago we did some other program for kids…. isn’t there something good (and inexpensive) out there???
– I’m also tempted to quit German and change to French (which I figured we would add in at some point) – I know a bit more French, French resources are a lot more available, and it is more helpful here in Canada…. (I just grew to hate it in school…)
Physed – Swimming lessons
Music – work on Violin again…..
Copywork (either from the Writing with Ease, or his selections on other days…)
I think that is about it… suggestions? Does it sound reasonable?
I broke up the Lifeprint videos into 3 10 or 15 minute sections. It takes us longer, but gives us more time to practice and retain. We watch a video portion on Monday and then review the free printable cards and tell the story from the printable book with the signs we’ve learned. Keeping it short has made it more fun and a lot less overwhelming. Maybe you should relax on the German and see if the ASL or French seems more do-able – as your kids are pretty young, maybe not doing 2-3 foreign languages would help all of you.
We have enjoyed the Bible selections from Discover the Scriptures. They have added recipes and crafts to some of them. Some we do and some I skip.
On your science, I would do the readings and add only one of the two experiement programs and stick with it…too many things to add equals nothing gets done here. 😉 You still make progress doing only one!
I wish I would live close to you and could help suzukimom, I am a native German 😉 But another question about foreign lanuage, how often do you schedule foreign languages? This would be for my DD8, she will start Latin.
Blessings Christine
