Wondering on how best to weigh our week using Delightful Reading for structured instruction & Bob Books, Fitzroy Readers & Pathway Readers for reading experience/practice.

Our 6 yr old boy knows his letters and their basic sounds, can read CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words with concentration & knows 20 + sight words …

How have you structured your reading for yr.1 in your weekly plan? 2 days of instructional activities with 3 days reading experience or 3 days of instructional activities with 2 days reading experience or something altogether different?! Ideas welcome!

Any thoughts? I have a tendency to push to hard … and want to make sure I’m balancing this out well … I know I know him best, but I’d love some ideas from your own experiences to help me form a plan … which will inevitably morph as he grows and learns ;0)

I’m not really considered year 1 yet but I’ll offer how we do it/will do it. We are still word building and my dd6 (will be 6 in a week) is about at the same place. CVC and several sight words. I think once you are doing the actual reading lessons you have enough change up going from learning the words and the next day word building to keep it interesting. I personally hope, once we reach this point, to allow her to practice reading when she desires to read. For example, now she likes to/can read some BOB books. When she wants to we just read at the end of the lesson since the lessons are so short.

This is how I envision it. I would also like to see other options.
