Our 10 year old is struggling with place value of large numbers.  She seems to have a good grasp on ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands, but is really balled up since we threw in millions.  Does anyone have suggestions on games or manipulatives to teach large numbers?

    Thanks,

    Melissa

Some of our children have used Rod and Staff when they were young. They were taught place value with a little barn picture. The lamb slept in the One’s stall, the pig slept in the Ten’s stall, the pony slept in the hundred’s stall. It cemented a spot for those three and then the work became easier as far as identifying each place in a number. It doesn’t work for every child, but doing something similar might help?

    other than that, bump. ;0)

I see from your blog that your son uses RS math – maybe you could make additional place value cards up to the millions. When you say she has a good grasp of thousands, does that mean tens and hundreds of thousands? Can she see that 10,000 is 10 1000s, that 100,000 is 100 1000s and so on? Maybe using the RS counting for awhile with these large #s would help

No, she does not have a good grasp of 10,000 and 100,000.   This actually just occurred to me.  She understands single digits, 10’s, 100’s and 1,000, but going higher seems to lead to confusion.   We’ve been using MUS for the past three years, but really hit a wall last year in Gamma around lesson 21, trying to multiply with multiple digits.  I pushed through to lesson 24ish before scrapping it and taking the summer off.  We opted to try something different this year, but of course after some minor review of addition and subtraction, it goes to place value of millions and we are just stuck.  I’m considering RS, just currently having trouble managing our time 🙁  I really think this is a place value issue.  Most of the games and manipulatives are conducive to teaching lower level place value.  It’s hard to find resources to teach millions….. or maybe I’m going about this all wrong.

    Thanks,

    Melissa

We used the Khan tutorials for place value, along with some games online.  All are free.

Short game, can be used with one or two players- questions go to the hundred billions.  No instruction just “what place is the 7 in?”

Maybe have her watch the Khan Academy videos.  We did not go through all of them but I know they go into the hundred million, at least.  I liked the explanations that we watched.

Tutorial and games.  I have not used this free site for math, only for science topics.

This is one of my son’s favorite sites.  I do not see anything for place value beyond the thousand place, but the site has tons of games so it could be there.  Maybe under Pre-Algebra.  A lot of the programs I have looked at has the higher numbers grouped into the pre-algebra sections…

Could you make additional place value cards to go with the RS ones? I think RS goes up to 4 digits, so if you made 5, 6, and 7 digit ones to add to the set that would take you into the millions.

She understands 1’s, 10’s and 100’s. How can you show her/help her understand that thousands come in 1’s, 10’s and 100’s, then millions come in 1’s, 10’s and 100’s? When we get to a thousand of something it earns a new name (a thousand thousands are called a million).

Is she a kinesthetic learner? I came across this idea the other day and am thinking about using it with my 9yo:

My son had a terrible time with place value and then one day I sat down and on a white board showed him that there are 3 places or rooms to a family or house.

A hundred place, a tens place, a ones place once the hundreds place has more than 9 in it, then the next # starts a new ones place in a new family The Thousands and once the hundreds place in the Thousands family has more than 9 in it, then the next # starts a new ones place in a new family The Millions and once the hundreds place in the Millions family has a 9 in it, then the next # starts a new ones place in a new family The Billions and etc… You can tell the difference between the families because there is a , or picture it as a fence between the houses….

Billions,  Millions,  Thousands,  (name of this family or house is based on what you are counting…dollars, pigs, people, etc.)

    HTO, HTO, HTO, HTO

    978, 654, 321, 012

978,654,321,012 = Nine Hundred Seventy eight Billion, six hindred fifty four Million, three hundred twenty one Thousand, and twelve whatever you are counting and if you don’t know what you are counting this house or family is left with no name 🙂

Had to tell him that when we read the number, we start on left and with the hundreds place, tens place, ones place then family, etc…

This is the only thing that my son understood. I showed him video after video on youtube, Kahn academy and anything else I could think of. Hope it helps. he is 7 and now gets it pretty well.

It certainly makes sense to me to tell this story. I’m going to borrow it at our house. ;0) Thanks!

I found this poster idea that I am going to put in my son’s math binder for reference.

nerakr, that blog post looks fun! Thanks for sharing 🙂

I love the poster srlord.  Where you able to download and print it or did you recreate your own?  Prior to re-checking this forum, I created similar mini place value posters.  However, I love that they incorporated standard, written, and expanded notation on their version.   I wasn’t able to print it though 🙁

    Thanks again everyone!

In order to download and print, you have to set-up an account.  There is a free account option and then a paid option if you want to make available or sell your own materials on the website.  A lot of the resources are free, however.

You may have already created an account, but it took me longer than I would like to admit looking for how to download.  =)

I think someone else on another thread recommended creating a math reference folder so I am considering setting something like that up.  My son is hard on his papers so I will probably re-print this on cardstock and have it laminated.
