I have on our list to read Pinocchio this year. There are a bajillion versions at the library. Is there one in particular that you would recommend?

The one by Carlo Collodi is the ‘real’ Pinocchio – all the others are ‘paraphrases’ ;0). Hopefully they have the original at your library, and, if not, ask them why not!

I agree; avoid anything that has written: abridged, adapted or based on, etc.

If you can’t get it at the library, it’s in the public domain and can be found here for free: http://www.mainlesson.com/display.php?author=collodi&book=pinocchio&story=_contents

Just in case you are interested, you can listen to the audio book here. There are lots of other classics, too. We just finished listening to Pinocchio and it was very good!

We’re listening to the audio version as well.  The boys kept turning their nose up at the thought of Pinnochio becasue they were thinking Disney, but they are enjoying listening to the original very much.

One thing to keep in mind is that Pinnochio is that it was originally written in another language, so you can find different “unabridged” versions that use different words – because the translator was different.

But of course there are lots of change and abridged versions, some of which bare almost no resemblance to the original.
