When using the picture study portfolios, do you display ALL the pictures at once, or just a couple at a time.

The instructions suggest 6 art prints out of the 8 provided be covered (or all 8 if one wants).

Anyway, I have all 8 up on our large bulletin board, but it seems like so much to look at all at once.  Too busy.  I think I need a smaller board or maybe individual frames for a couple at a time???

How do you present the prints?

    Thanks,

    Robin

We don’t actually use the SCM portfolios, but the AO artist selections…however, I’ve found it helpful to display all of the term’s prints at once.  I put them up and leave them for the whole term.  I’ve found my kids (and even my hubby!) studying them in their spare time and thinking about them more than when I only displayed one at a time.  We will take the time over the term to study each one individually and in detail as part of our formal picture-study time – we just take that one down off the wall, do our study, and put it back up.   I’ve found that this has enhanced the quality of our picture study a lot.

I read that families hang them in frames, hang them on the fridge, keep them in a notebook, or on the computer screen saver.  I’ve tried a few options.  I wish I could tell you that I’ve found a way that consistently works for us, but we usually change it up every year.  This year, our artists are not part of the portfolios, so I’ve had to go looking for their works.  I tied them to our nature study which has been fun.  We studied Audubon first.  I utilized the computer screen for these pics and we read A Nest for Celeste.  The blog, All Things Bright and Beautiful, had some Audubon pics while we were studying him.  We are studying Linnaeus now.  Both of these artists have meant delving more into the field guide world.  Our third term will be about Beatrix Potter.  So, little books and pretty Armitt Museum investigations are how we will study her works.

This year’s study has been much different than those we’ve done in the past.  It’s been much more hands on.  I suppose it’s due to the artists I chose and the way they shared their art with the world.  Not boring at all.  I hope this gives you a glimpse at possibilities.  We’ve used Discovering Great Artists with great success in the past.  I really think it causes us to notice more about the media each artist used and it really brings out a discussion of the details in works of art.  “Knowing” the artists and their methods seems to make us appreciate them even more.

I’d ideally like to tie the Creating a Masterpiece DVDs to our study, but I haven’t been that coordinated….yet.

We display one at a time, only the one we’re focusing on for the week. I just hang it on the fridge. When we finish up an artist we may take them all out and review.

    Thanks everyone.

I think part of the issue is my bulletin board is rather long and skinny; it hangs up and down longwise rather than wide so the top pictures are way up near the crown molding.  It’s also odd dimensions.  I don’t remember where I got it, but I’ve never seen one this size.

I’ve always displayed all our chosen prints at once rather they be from a portfolio set or some from AO’s rotation or my own choosing.  This time, though, I’m not digging the display!  Maybe it’s the artist…John Constable???  Who knows!

I am going to get a different board…I have a 40% off coupon from Hobby Lobby 🙂

    Thanks again.

I think it might be the artist. I LOVE Constable- but his works are often such large and detailed sceans… I imagine it would be overwhelming. 🙂
