Any updates on new picture study portfolios? 😉 I know that they aren’t up for sale yet, but it would be great if we could get a list of the ones that will be out this year. We will start our next school year in July and I am trying to plan out what I need to buy for picture study and whether or not I need to be on the lookout for other resources for this. 😉 We love the SCM packages! They just make picture study so easy! 🙂 Thanks! Christy
Emily is working on others but she is expecting her second baby soon, wedding in the family and they live on a very busy farm. I told her the other day that folks were enjoying them and she’s thrilled that they are blessing others.
Wow, she is a busy girlie right now. 😉 Thanks so much for the info, Robin!
There are two on our list for next year that I will be purchasing soon. For the other two, I will just either purchase a large calendar for prints or find a nice book.
So glad that you told her how much we were enjoying these. 🙂 This past school year was the first that we got picture study done every single week consistently. They just make it so easy to get the job done.
Hi, Emily! That was so sweet of you to take your precious time to reply to my post. 🙂
We have not done all of the picture study portfolios yet. I like to mix some older artists with some that are more modern each year. Our plan this coming year is to do: da Vinci, Mary Cassatt, Norman Rockwell, and then Michelangelo.
I just placed my order for da Vinci and Michelangelo and can’t wait to get them.
That is a good idea, to alternate different styles in the artists that you choose. I tell moms all the time to make sure the artists they study back to back are distinct or different from one another. Direct teaching on composition and style, technique, etc. that the artist uses is not necessary–the children pick up on it quite naturally.
One problem with putting together “Modern” artist portfolios is the copyright law. We can’t reproduce an artist’s work unless he’s been dead for 75 years. Unfortunately, that means I won’t be doing a Rockwell portfolio any time soon!
Fortunately, in art history, the “modern” period begins about 1850, so Millet, Turner, Constable, Monet and van Gogh are all “modern” artists–and each of their styles are so unique, especially when compared to a Renaissance or Baroque artist.
Enjoy your new portfolios! I love to hear of more kids getting great exposure to art.
