I am in need of help with picking poets for next year (middle ages but not necessarily in that time).  I just don’t know enough about poetry and need help.  Could someone give me some good poets that there stuf makes sense or is more upbeat.  I want my boys 12 and under to find appreciation in it.  Thanks

We have always followed the Curriculum Guide for choosing a poet. For us, Robert Louis Stevenson was last year. His poems are upbeat, but probably too young for a 12yo. Your younger children might enjoy his work, however.

We are enjoying Lewis Carroll very much this year. I think your 12yo would even enjoy him. His poems are funny and nonsensical and very fun. We are all having a blast memorizing such poems as Beautiful Soup and ‘Tis the Voice of the Lobster. It really adds some creative craziness into our day!

I like your qualifications for poetry enjoyment, Misty.  You sound like me.  I’m not into dark, depressing stuff either.  =)  I haven’t actually done any middle ages stuff, but my girls sometimes laugh out loud to the fun poems in the Random House Book of Poetry for Children.  (They are 11 and under).  They are getting to where they like listening to anyone that I choose though.

Though he is not from the time period  you will be studying, what about Shel Silverstein?
