As someone new to following the SCM Curriculum Guide, I was just wondering… with a delayed reader, is it best to stick with the books listed for her “grade level,” even if adaptations have to be made to help her comprehension or is it best to pick the books that are on her reading level, even if they are listed for an earlier “grade?”

    Thanks!

I think it is better to stick with her ability. You can read upper levels to her as you are able and from those she could read just a bit as she gains confidence. I have the same thing going on here and for the books I am reading to my daughter, I use an index card with a cut out in it (this has a real name and I don’t remember what it is!). I place the card over a word on the page and she reads it. We do this for about one minute before I read the book. It is such a simple thing, but I’m finding that as she focuses on the one word at a time she is gaining confidence to try more words and even follow along with me. We have found that it is helpful to give the child big pushes in the areas of their abilities and small nudges in their weaknesses.

    Blessings,

    Cindy
