I am needing to find an alternative to piano lessons. The price has gotten so high that I just can’t afford it. My son has been playing for 2 years. He also plays violin. He is very talented musically (primarily by ear. He can sit down and play anything on his violin and piano. He played Vivaldi’s Spring the 2nd day after having received a violin.) and really has a God given gift. I hesitate in stopping lessons because he needs the musical training. I also have one more that hasn’t had any music training. She is 8. I am looking at Piano for Quitters and Piano for Life. Has anyone used these? Or do you have other recommendations? Piano for Quitters intro video on their website sounded CMish.
I have piano for quitters and dd11 has done the first lesson and enjoyed it. She’s been playing for 5 years traditionally but has trouble reading music still. She isn’t gifted musically, but enjoys it. We loaned PIano for quitters to two sisters in music school and both thought it valuable and worthwhile. We’re about to make some sort of transition, too. We have two in lessons now and a third ready to start.
My girls are taking lessons with a Simply Music instructor, and we get a DVD that has each lesson on the DVD – they also have a homeschool program that doesn’t involve the expense of a teacher. I LOVE Simply Music – after taking traditional lessons for 7 years and struggling along, I searched for a different way to give my girls the musical confidence I lack and a less persnickety method than traditional lessons. My girls have been playing for four months and it’s AMAZING what they are able to play. Whenever they sit down at a piano people inevitably ask me how long they have been playing and are shocked at what they are able to do after such a short time. One thing I really love, is that they are already learning accompaniment (sp?) – I NEVER learned how to do that. Now, I can even sit down and accompany our family in some simple worship songs, even if I’ve never played them before. It’s a trill and I can’t say good enough things about it. If you son is super gifted, you may want to consider putting him through the Simply Music teacher’s program and then he could GIVE lessons! My 8 year old daughter sits down with our 15 year old neighbor and teaches her what she’s been learning and they both enjoy it! I just can’t say enough about how different and special this program is!
Does it teach music – theory, etc? I’ve looked at Simply Music before but I can’t find any info. on what andhow it actually teaches? Can you give me more info?
It seems comprehensive, but we’re just at the beginning levels – they don’t start by teaching kids how to read music, they start by teaching them to play music, that’s one of the things that I like about it, I feel like it’s a more natural progression and more enjoyable. (I know that very fact is horrifying to many traditional piano teachers – kind of like talking about CM methods to a traditional public school teacher). I really don’t know any more than our personal experience. Sorry.
