I am teaching my 7yo adopted Chinese son to read. We’ve only had him a year so we’ve spent this time getting fluent in English and learning very basic living and school skills. He’s doing OK with his letter sounds but forgets. I’m not pushing him at all. We’re going very slowly. I’ve started with Reading Made Easy since that’s what I used with my other 7yo.
He’s very motivated by games and I thought about coming up with some that would help him remember sounds. Any ideas? I thought of a Go Fish game that would be easy to make with index cards and the sounds we’re working on. I’d like to do a board game on a piece of regular sized card stock and stickers to make a path. I would laminate it and write over the laminate the sounds we’re working on. (Any idea of a pen that would write on the laminate? Dry erase does not work very well.)
Other ideas? My other two read easily so I’m kind of at loss.
We make the puppet, paste whatever letter it is on it. Or you can write it. Just make sure the letter is big. Then I make up a little song/poem to go with the puppet. Like- a, a apple open your mouth and say A for apple, a! Or b, b bear, big and brown B for bear, b! I am not very good at it, but the kids like it. Each day of that week we sing the song/poem for that puppet. Each week we add a puppet to the song.
