I just started homeschooling my kindergartner and he loves Saxon math so I bought Saxon Phonics. My oldest did not learn to read using phonics so I really wanted to teach my kindergartner using this method. Can anyone suggest something more fun and simpler? Thanks!

I did not use a strict phonics approach to teaching my dd how to read (we did a combination of sight words and phonics), but for a very simple, can-do take on a phonics-based approach, I suggest Ruth Beechick’s book The 3 R’s (In addition to reading, she also talks about beginning math and language art skills for the early elementary years.) It is not a curriculum per se, but she does walk you through how you can teach reading with a phonics-based approach with out an expensive or cumbersome curriculum package.

I liked this program, which is free – just download the booklets.

We used it very successfully for a couple of years. The books are for the parent and child to read together, and it is so simple – just print and read. Or you can even read them online if you want, so not even a need to print.

I’m using Saxon phonics–it’s the only thing that’s worked for mine.  The lessons are more formal, but they go quickly and it’s working.  For us, it was my last ditched effort before shelling out alot of money for a dyslexia type curriculum. (Although we now know mine aren’t dyslexic, we have auditory processing problems instead.)
