    Hi All!

I’m looking for something basic to strengthen my 8 yo ds’s phonics skills. He’s reading but still needing lots of help with basics such as whether or not the vowel says its name, etc.

We have the Pathway readers. Would you suggest the “Pathway readers” phonics workbook? I see that this is not on the bookfinder. Has anyone used it? We normally don’t do workbooks but I thought this might help to strengthen his reading.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks! You’re all gems and don’t know what I’d do without yah! 😉

I have not used the Pathway workbook, Heather, but I did have a suggestion. You can go through the books you use now, looking for different ways a letter says its sound and why it does that. You could have him chart it, as well. I would be pretty methodical about it. Perhaps take one story and look for all the different sounds ‘a’ makes and discover what made it do that. Then, you could have a page for short a, long a, etc. Or you could just do it orally.

    Blessings,

With a child that is reading but needs fluency I would just read the books and work on “rules” when you come to them in the book. Then have them write the rule and some words that match that rule in a notebook.

Thanks, Shanna! The notebook idea is a great suggestion! Is this what you have done with your dc?

    Thanks so much!
