I’m currently taking a course entitled Ready, Set, Read trying to get ideas on how to teach ds5 to read or improve his reading, if, as dh and I suspect, he’s already reading. The most recent lesson focused on phonemic awareness, or letter-sound relationships. Have any of you done this? Is it really necessary? If you have done it, what sort of games have you played? We’re already using word families, but that doesn’t work 100% of the time. I’m thinking we may need to start clapping out syllables and play some games with refrigerator magnets in which one of us makes a word, he reads it, then I change either the first or last letter and he has to read the new word. Any input, ladies?
For me personally, I think it is important to know the phonograms. I don’t know if this is CM or not though. I am working with my 6 and 4.5 year olds to teach them how to read. I have All About Spelling that we will be working through as a reading program. They have already learned the phonograms for the alphabet letters (all the different sounds that the letters can make). Now we are working on the short vowel sounds and segmenting words to hear all the sounds. Along with this, I am using the ideas and activities from Cat Phonics (free online reading program).
We tried some phonics type programs and crashed and burned. Then we found Ruth Beechick’s Home start books and followed the one for teaching reading. For us this simple approach proved to be the best thing.
Thanks for the link, CJKJ! It looks perfect to teach my 5 yr old ds to read. I was still not sure how to start him on this path. I”m glad I have a plan now! -Miranda
