He reads well & will be going into 4th grade – we use a Bible journal as suggested by HUFI so I’m not needing a big study with fill in the blanks or anything workbooky.
He wants to do Proverbs. I mainly need / want something to give him a little structure. Maybe a theme or thought provoking question. I looked at the SCM Proverbs study, but it says 7th-12th grades. Would it be too much for a 9yo of average maturity?
I was also thinking of Draw to Learn Proverbs. Or any other ideas for Proverbs or Psalms (which is his second choice).
Since he’s already using a journal, could he use the SPACE or SOAP plans? SPACE=sins I need to confess; promises to claim; attitudes to change; commands to obey; examples to follow. SOAP=Scripture (write it out); observation; application; prayer. You or he could keep a chart or make a bookmark with the plan on it and keep it in his journal.
I have draw to learn proverbs. i think it would be excellent as long as the drawing part doesn’t become a time to dawdle and take up the. entire. day. I haven’t started using it yet with my dc because I’m pretty sure some of them will figure out a way to make the drawing part take an hour or more so they can put off their other school work. So we will probably use it sparingly (the drawing part) or do it at the end of the day or set some ground rules. I do want them to do it on their own though.
Last year my then 9 year old read thru Proverbs each day month after month. That was it. This year as a 10 year old she will do the Wisdom for Life from SCM. I will take it slow with her. She may take 2 years to complete it. My olders have done it. The only initial writing is copying verses that they find in their readings. Then later they can go back and write a summary of what they found. You could save that until he is older. We have loved the way they find God’s wisdom in Proverbs for themselves.
I looked at Drawing Proverbs. Love it. My one daughter would love it. However, I have the same concern as Linda. Here is a thought, read the verses in the morning, do the drawing as last thing in school day or at night before bed – with the understanding that she would have to stop at bedtime! If wanted, one could read verses and do SCM Wisdom for Life portion in the morning and the drawing part later in the day. Just a thought.
