We’ve been reading Black Beauty since the middle of Feb. and aren’t even half way through. We’ve had new stress in our lives that seems to be taking it’s toll on the routineness of the school day and we haven’t been reading it daily so there is a feeling of disconnectedness. The children don’t find it interesting and make it known that reading time since we started that book isn’t pleasant. I, however, have enjoyed reading it and have tried to encourage them by my excitement in it but I’m not sure if I should finish what we’ve started or just take a mulligan and try a different book? I don’t want them to perceive that it’s ok to quit midway through something, but I also want to follow CM’s advice on making it “…bright and pleasant to the child”.
Cindy, Thank you!! Why am I one of these people that needs someone to give me ‘permission’ to do what I feel in my heart is the right thing?! Oh well; and I think I will finish it on my own.
CJKJ, we could do it on some evenings, but the book is just not their ‘cup of tea’ so it still wouldn’t be pleasant for them. They love read aloud time; but for some reason this book has turned them off. Thanks for the encouragement!
I think it really depends on the book. Some books even if my children are not enjoying them just need to be pushed through for their literary quality or the impression the book will leave for the future.
I do not think that Black Beauty fits into either of those so I would just put it to the side and find another that they will fall in love with.
