Can anyone recommend a good pencil grip? I just looked at amazon and there are a ton. DS is almost 7 and still uses 3 fingers to hold the pencil.

We use the pencil grip ergonomic writing aid (first one that pops up when you search for pencil grips). They work well for left and right handed kids (I have both and I’m a lefty).

Totally agree with Tristian. That’s the original pencil grip and works the best for that age group, though if DS has his fingers crossing over then go with the “crossover grip”. This controls the hand a little more than the Pencil Grip, and he can graduate from the “crossover” to the Pencil Grip.

is the one Tristan recommended on an older thread and I purchased it for my ds9 who keeps wrapping his thumb around the front and this helped him so far. He has used it for 2 weeks now. Occasionally I have to remind him to keep his thumb in place. If he was younger, I maybe would have needed the crossover grip. But since he is older, he is more aware of his finger placement.

I just wanted to give an update on the pencil grip. I had to keep reminding ds to keep his thumb in place. I found that Rainbow Resource carries these individually and the crossover type by the same company, so I decided to add one on to my order. It has really helped ds to stop wrapping his thumb around it and I don’t have to keep verbally correcting him. My younger dd was holding her pencil too close to the bottom and with too tight of grip, so I gave her the regular ergonomic pencil grips since she is not a thumb wrapper and they help her. These grips are also supposed to be good for older adults with arthritis. I am starting to like them myself. So now I am ordering more of the crossovers for ds to put some on his art pencils too.

Does anyone know if this pencil grip would work for correcting a 3-finger hold by and 8.5 and almost 10 year old? We have no thumb problems, just the third finger as part of the main grip problem. We have a lot of “aching hand” complaints whenever we do any amount of written work.
I’m thinking for DS8.5 I might have hope to correct, but do I try to correct this for DS10, or do we just concentrate on typing at this point?

Are you meaning 3 fingers and a thumb? Because I have always held my pencil where it rests on my ring finger and I can hold the grip the same way UNLESS I WANT to hold it with 2 fingers and a thumb. Then the grip helps me to keep my fingers in place without slipping. If I am conscious about it, I could work at changing. So I think it could help someone who WANTS to change. Does that help?

Sorry, I meant two fingers and a thumb. Index finger AND third finger used to hold/aim the pencil and thumb used as support. My understanding is that we’re supposed to be teaching to use the thumb and index finger as the main “writers”, and using third finger just as a support (where third finger is just used to “rest” the pencil on its side)…hope I’m making sense – any help welcome!
