So our 8 year old daughter holds the pencil wrong. However she has good hand writing, does her work in a timely manner and is very artictic. I have spent years trying to correct her grip. Does it really matter how she holds a pencil?
I made a point to change ODS’s last year (at age 6) mainly because he had a LOT of hand and arm fatigue because of it – he was gripping things so hard crayons and pencils would break! Also, the way he was holding it was intefering with him doing cursive since he could not get a good fluid motion with his fingers. I noticed ODD is now doing the same thing that he was and am planning on working with her sooner rather than later. I probably wouldn’t have thought much about it if it weren’t for the obvious issues he was having with it.
We use grotto grips here. My daughter was the same, very artistic and beautiful handwriting despite the grip. We have continued to correct it. She actually now has the best grip of the four.
My friend let her son go. He’s almost grown now, a senior. His grip is obviously different. Doesn’t seem to have affected him.
Different strokes for different folks I guess, pun intended 🙂
We used the Pencil Grip and I thought it was working fine, but it turns out that they do not like it and think it is too fat. And there are still some minor issues with a normal pencil. I looked into options this year and am going to try a tri-write Laddie. It is a little bigger than normal and triangle shaped. It is recommended for cursive and has good reviews at Amazon.
My oldest did NOT like using the Grotto grips that I bought… he worked hard to be able to get rid of them so for him it really only took a couple of days of using them, then a week or so of gentle reminders before he was good to go with the “new” grip.
