My husband started playing music last night for the kids to dance to and it reminded me of a game I used to play with the pre-schoolers I worked with.  When the music plays that kids dance.  When the music stops they stop.  Dance Freeze!

It is SO hot here in Dallas and we don’t have a yard, we live in a town house.  But my kids need to get their energy out in a way other than chasing each other up and down the 3 flights of stairs with light sabers.  🙂  Are there any other ideas like Dance Freeze out there?  A fun game for the kids that we could just drop and do and not put a lot of thought into?

    Thanks!

It is for issues like that that we got the Wii…..  Active Life Explorer is fantastic, and they like Wii sports too.

The other thing we do believe it or not is push-ups, situps, jumping jacks… my kids love to do them!

And we have a membership to the YMCA… they do swim lessons for their “official” PE, and there are other activities they can do too…

Suzukimom, do they offer swim lessons year around? Also, could you tell me about Active Life Explorer? We have Wii Sports and like it okay…

We do push-ups, pull-ups, karate practice, etc here too! We do those things between subjects to help with focus issues.

A friend loves her mini-trampoline (bouncer) and they hung a swing in a doorway, with a chin-up bar above.

We have a game called Hullabaloo, and my kids love it.  It’s a little bit like simon says, a litle bit like twister (without the getting tangled up part) and a little bit like musical chairs; it calls out directions, plays music, and when it stops, it calls out more directions.  At the end, there’s a winner’s spot and if you’re on that spot, it says “take a bow!” or “do a funky dance” or something fun like that.  We’ve had it for about 3 years, and they still love it.  (dd8, dd4- ds 18mo just mimicks them LOL)

Another one we played when our oldest was little was called “I Can Do That!” which was also fun, just watch for tinies trying to eat the foam pieces!

We bought both of these at Target when they had their games on sale, so we didn’t pay near what they’re listed for on Amazon…

All the Y’s in our city run swim lessons year round… once a week from fall to spring, and daily T-Th in the summer (for 2 week sessions, and you can sign up for 2 of the summer sessions.)    It is included with our Y membership (and they can subsidize your membership based on income).

There was a recent post about Wii games you might want to look for on here.

Active Life Explorers has a floor mat that hooks into the Wii. and up to 8 players can play at a time (only 6 on the mat at a time…) but can also be played with just 1.  In it you are an explorer in various situations where you have to do something.  The simplest situation is you are on a bridge that is falling apart behind you – so you have to run to the other side (in spot on the mat) before it falls.  There are activities that have you jumping, running, pressing various spots on the mat, sitting and hitting the spots (pushing a sled with your hands) etc.  Some of the stuff is loosely based on the type of things Indiana Jones had to do (running from a giant ball, for example).    It is a pretty good workout (in my opinion) and the kids love it.  (they do each have situations in it they don’t like….)

I know of people that have the mini tramp indoors – we honestly don’t have the room….

We have a mini tramp and honestly I love for the kids to use it, it is such a good workout, but it is *so* in the way. And with 7 kids and a big fat hairy dog, the last thing I need is another thing on my floor. But the adventure game sounds like fun, and we’re getting into rainy season here so maybe we’ll look into that. Smile

Oh yeah, I meant to say, we like Hullabaloo a lot too! I love that it is pretty random in who wins, so it works well for those days when the kids are bouncing off the walls and need to expend some energy BUT you’d rather avoid intense competition.

Thanks for the great ideas.  I’ll look into Hullabaloo and maybe a Wii game.  We have a Wii, but only the Wii Sports like bowling and tennis.  I think that 109 degree days deserve some Wii time.

We had a membership at the Y when we lived in Florida, but haven’t looked into it since living here.  My kids are getting old enough that I think they’d enjoy it more.  We do have a pool, but it’s too hot to even swim.  (My kids have my fair skin.)

As for the mini trampoline, I applaud those who have the courage.  Haha

There are some other better wii sports games, but I can’t think of them off the top of my head.  I’m having this problem too, except I don’t have 3 flghts of stairs! Yikes. lol  I’m very much looking forward to having a yard again in a couple weeks, but even with a yard, it’s just been too hot to be outside very long in the middle of the day.  I’ve even taken mine to McD’s and just ordered drinks so I don’t feel guilty about letting them play inside for free to burn some energy. lol

Our YMCA’s also offer some summer sports for kids as well–my daughter just finished up a season of basketball, but it’s probably too late for that.  Fall session sign-ups are going on now.

My kids came up with their own PE today and I thought I’d share the simple game.  A balloon.  They just tossed it in the air and ran around trying to keep it off of the floor.  Why can’t I think of these things? 🙂

Just south of Dallas here and I feel ya.  It has been miserable.  Wii sports was a lifesaver, until our Wii went out on us last wk.  I love the idea of a mini trampoline, I can’t believe that never crossed my mind.
