Pathway Readers- part of curriculum or simply extra reading?

My daughter is just now starting to read and enjoy early chapter books- she is wrapping up second grade now.  I am wondering whether I should continue to have her read the Pathway readers.  Specifically, is there a word progression where new words are learned that build upon each other, thereby making it wise to continue to read them?  Or are they simply for reading practice, which my daughter will get from reading other chapter book series?

Should I have my daughter read a chapter from Pathway during our individual study time, and then let her read whatever she would like from my approved reading material selections on her own free time?

    Thank you for your insight!

Because the Pathway Readers gradually increase in difficulty, they are used for reading practice. It is your choice to continue with the Pathway Readers or to use chapter books. Whichever you decide to use, she should read aloud to you until you are confident that she is not struggling with harder words or skipping words in her reading because she doesn’t know them or because she is reading too fast and not carefully. Having her read aloud to you will also help her learn how to read in a pleasing voice.

If she enjoys the Pathway Readers, I would have her read those aloud for reading practice. I would allow her to read chapter books on her own time.

Just wanted to chime in that YES continue her reading out loud (not every book but some book). My 6th grader still does (as does my 4th and 1st grader (he is just beginning reading)). It is so good because they can’t skip over those hard words and it is so good for them to practice hearing their voice, reading clearly… I hope to continue it for the long haul because I see such great benefits, including them being willing to read verses in church, in front of everyone, and I think it goes back to them reading out loud so much that it is just “second nature”. I did not grow up reading aloud at all, and it took me a long time to be comfortable even reading to my kids (even though I read a lot to myself).

Oh and I find that my spelling has really improved since I started reading aloud. I am NOT a natural speller, always has been a struggle, but because reading aloud makes me slow down and see the word vs reading to myself, I find that even as an adult it has helped improve my spelling which is a nice plus which will hopefully ring true for my kidos as well. 🙂

We still read Pathway Readers now in 5th grade, mostly because of the good character lessons learned in their stories.  CLE Reading books are also good character stories for reading practice.
